Small Groups at IPC

In the midst of a world that lauds the success of the individual over relationships, liquidity over stability, being a spectator over being a participant, God calls us to be engaged in each other’s lives. He wants us to have significant relationships where we can know and be known, where we can live out our faith commitments and where lives are transformed.

To that end, one of the best ways for this transformation to take place is in the context of a small group, intentional relationships where God’s word, prayer, study, mutual support and care are experienced and nurtured. In addition, small groups are a place for service and outreach as groups are called to make a difference within the church family and in the world.

SMALL GROUPS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Sermon-based Small Group?

Small Groups are made up of approximately 10 people who meet weekly in homes, at IPC, workplaces, coffee houses and restaurants to study, to share, and to support one another in their Christian lives. The studies are based on the previous week’s Sunday message using a curriculum designed from the message outline with additional supporting passages. Each group is led by a trained Facilitator who is accountable to the Pastor of Small Groups. A typical meeting lasts just over an hour and includes the opening of the Bible, dialogue over the passage and worship service and prayer. No homework is required.

Why use the Sermon-based model?

This model enhances the effectiveness of the large group worship experience by building a discussion around application of the weekly message. Imagine this as a “lecture-lab” style that encourages people to personalize their insights, get feedback from group members, and discover how Scripture works out in real life.

Who is the study for?

Small group study is for anyone who wants to learn more about the topic and text that was preached the past weekend. This will take place through Bible study and application in the context of a group. Because of the practical and relational nature of these studies, it works well for both new and mature Christ followers alike or as an excellent introduction to Christianity for a spiritual seeker.

When and where do the groups meet?

Small Groups meet on various days and nights of the week in various settings throughout the community. Contact the church office for information on locations and times.

What is the required commitment?

Joining a small group requires a commitment to attend the weekly meetings. This commitment is the key to strong relationships and healthy groups. At the end of each session, participants have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group, or taking a break.

Is childcare provided?

Childcare is not provided by the church. Each family is to work out their own arrangements. Families may want to share a sitter or to swap childcare with a family whose group meets on a different night/day. A list of potential babysitters is available through the church office.

How do I join a small group?

1. You can stop by the Small Group Ministries registration table on the patio or contact the church office.

2. You can contact one of the Small Group leaders to sign-up directly with them.

3. Prior to your first meeting, your Small Group facilitator will call you with the location and directions.
